Our latest project is called the “Looking Glass” desk. It started as a really cute three-sided small desk that needed quite a bit of work. It ended up (still) being a really cute three-sided desk in the theme of Alice in Wonderland or Alice Through the Looking Glass. Or some combination of the two stories. We found a chaotic-looking decoupage pattern with pocket watches, queen of hearts playing cards, mad hatter hats, and all sorts of things flying around in an ever-expanding spiral. I said, “this is perfect for the three-sided desk!” My vision was for a child or a young person heading off to live in a dorm on a college campus somewhere to have this adorable desk.
Decorated with a red and black checkerboard on each side and a white with incomplete black stripes completing the look on the sides. The front has the decoupage print cut to fit on the drawers and the pull-down front panel without damaging the overall picture. Inside the area of the pull-down front is a small work area, two small storage drawers, and some pocket storage areas for small items. It is all painted in red, black, and white with gold metallic paint on the legs.
The desk has some years on it, and while it is a solid wood piece of furniture, the wood was very dry and soaked up paint. This resulted in some warping – however, thankfully it seems to be settling somewhat into its normal shape as it dries and cures. It when we acquired it there were a good deal of dings, scratches, and places where it was coming apart a bit. All of that needed tending to and I am quite sure we did not get to all of the mending that needed doing. We did our best and it looks tremendously better! A little glue, a little caulk, some sandpaper, and a handful of new screws all helped
Amazingly, this piece sold before I even finished it! It is going to a young couple who have a food business they call the “White Rabbit.” A perfect match! And this project could not have been more fun to do!!
